İzmir Arıtma Çamur Yönetimi Master Plan İşi

A comprehensive master plan has been developed in accordance with the relevant legislation for the transportation, disposal, and use of wastewater treatment sludges originating from or expected to originate from the ongoing, planned, and projected wastewater treatment facilities operated by the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality - General Directorate of İzmir Water and Sewerage Administration (İZSU). This plan encompasses a long-term management strategy that includes population projections for the years 2020, 2030, 2040, and 2050. Additionally, it considers a saturation year for İzmir and potential projections for wastewater and sludge (quantity, quality, etc.) and explores various disposal and utilization options.

The definition of the actual services provided by our staff within the scope of the task:

  1. Current Situation Analysis: An evaluation has been made regarding the characterization of the sludge, as well as the factors that limit its usage characteristics. Studies have been conducted to identify potential sources contributing to these limitations.

  2. Planned Facilities of the Administration: The amount of wastewater and treatment sludge originating from the wastewater treatment facilities managed by the Administration, whether planned or under construction, has been determined.

  3. Population Projections: Population projections have been made for the district centers, towns, and villages in İzmir province to facilitate sludge management planning and to identify suitable disposal facilities.

  4. Wastewater and Sludge Projections: Calculations have been made based on current wastewater production, population, and sludge data, and the quantity and quality of treatment sludge for specific years have been forecasted. An analysis has been conducted to estimate the adequacy over time of existing sludge disposal methods, ongoing wastewater treatment facilities, and the capacity of current sludge digestion and drying facilities.

  5. Applicable Sludge Management Alternatives: A comprehensive, environmentally friendly disposal system that meets the regulatory requirements for wastewater treatment sludge quality has been developed. Various disposal methods such as anaerobic digestion and thermal processes have been researched. The plan has focused on obtaining an A-class bioproduct or additional fuel for industry while considering recovery and reuse aspects. It can be economically adapted to potential changes in population and settlement habits in the future.

  6. Usage Options Analysis: In evaluating the final sludge disposal product, market feasibility, transport logistics, and compliance with national and international regulations have been taken into account. Various alternatives have been investigated, including drying, composting, agricultural use, landscaping, incineration, and more.

  7. Regulatory Compliance: The report details the sludge regulation implemented in Turkey, EU countries, and the EPA. The bioproduct production has been examined in terms of heavy metal contents and other characteristics specified in these regulations.

  8. Master Plan Update: It is planned that the master plan will be reviewed by the Administration every five years to respond to changing needs. The goal-setting process for the next five years has also been summarized.

  9. Risk Action Plan: The identified risk categories related to sludge disposal methods and the corresponding action plans within these risk limits are outlined in the report.
